In 1947, Mr. Lin Xiaohai founded Private Haiqiang Medical Technology School.

In 1948, Tse-ven Soong founded Private Medical School of Hainan University.

In 1951, Private Haiqiang Medical Technology School and Private Medical School of Hainan University merged as Hainan Medical Specialized School.

In 1952, school was changed to Hainan Medical College.

In 1973, the affiliated hospital was set up.

In 1977, Hainan Medical College started its medical undergraduate program.

In 1983, Hainan Medical College merged into Hainan university.

In 1993, Hainan Medical University established with the approval of State Education Commission.

In 1994, Hainan Medical University was entitled to grant bachelor’s degree.

In 1996, Hainan Medical University passed the evaluation of undergraduate teaching of higher education institutions

In 2000, the campus was successfully moved to Chengxi.

In 2003, Hainan Medical University was approved to jointly foster postgraduates.

In 2006, Hainan Medical University started international education.

In 2007, the bid for a medical university was launched.

In 2013, Hainan Medical University was entitled to grant master’s degree. In 2014, Hainan Medical University was entitled to grant 7 professional master’s degree.

In 2016, Hainan Nongken General Hospital merged into Hainan Medical University and changed to the second affiliated hospital.

In 2018, Hainan General Hospital merged into Hainan Medical University and named Hainan affiliated Hospital

In 2019, Hainan Medical University was entitled to grant doctoral degree, and 2 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education were approved.

In 2020, Haikou Municipal People’s Government transferred land of 524693.33 square meter for Guilinyang campus.

In 2021, changing name to medical university was included in higher education institutions plan of the 15th Five-Year Plan of Hainan.

In July 2022, approved by both parties, UWE college of Hainan Medical University established.
